Consumer Health

In the last week, the one question that’s come up at nearly every client meeting is whether or not the U.S. is headed for a recession.

We believe it’s inevitable that the U.S. economy will enter a recession at some point, but we don’t believe that one will occur this year. One of the main reasons? You, the consumer.

Consumption powers more than two-thirds of the U.S. economy. Despite higher prices, supply chain shortages, and the pandemic, households continue to spend.

Here are three examples that point to a strong consumer:

  1. Household wealth: Although it’s fallen this year as a result of the market’s decline, net worth is still above pre-pandemic levels.
  2. Excess savings: At the start of COVID-19, we stayed at home and saved a lot more than we would have under “normal” circumstances.
  3. Financial obligation ratio: This measures the percentage of our disposable income that goes to debt payments, and it’s declined to the lowest levels since the ’80s.

We invite you to read, watch, or listen for more on the state of the consumer in our latest Sight|Lines.
